CHAPTER 5. The Cry in the Corridor

Chapter 5.
The Cry in the Corridor

Summary: Having been cooped up indoors for a few days Mary is restless and Martha, the maid, encourages her to go outside and get some colour in her and stop her from being that shade of "yeller" (yellow). The day goes as usual, Martha lights a fire and talks to Mary but today, Mary ventures outside and later on, there is a cry heard from down the corridor.

Characters: Mary Lennox, Martha, Ben Weatherstaff.
Setting: Inside the manor house, outside in the gardens.

Quote to work from: "At first each day passed by for Mary Lennox was exactly like the others. Every morning she awoke in her tapestried room and found Martha kneeling upon the hearth building her fire;"

Research, references, inspiration: As the chapter title is quite revealing itself I didn't want to visually give away and spoilers so for this chapter have decided to illustrate the fire that warms Mary's bedroom. The fire is a symbolic thing in this story as it is what builds a friendship between Mary and Martha. It is also the only sound that was heard when Mary hears a cry in the corridor as the house falls silent but the crackling of her fireplace. As the idea I have for this chapter title is relatively simple, all I need research into for inspiration and ideas is what a fireplace in the late 1800's would look like.
1800's fireplace stands.

1800's fireplace grate.

Another element of the story I wanted to include in my illustration was the tapestries that decorate Mary's bedroom. Like I did with the snake in the previous chapter title, I would like to collage some fabrics and patterns into the fire itself as to reflect the room it's in with its walls covered in tapestries.

A tapestry.
