CHAPTER 4. Martha

Chapter 4.
Martha

Summary: Having arrived at the manor house the previous evening (and previous chapter) Mary awakes to find herself in a grand bedroom and a young maid in her room lighting the fire. This maid, Martha, is a young local girl from Yorkshire. Mary doesn't like her initially and finds her rude and very different from her Ayah who waited on her hand and foot. Martha finds Mary quite interesting for a little girl. On the encouragement of Martha, Mary ventures outside to explore the grounds and gardens and meets Ben Weatherstaff and a curious little Robin.

Characters: Mary, Martha, Ben Weatherstaff, Robin.
Setting: Mary's bedroom, outdoors in the gardens.

Quote to work from: "Mary had always slapped her Ayah in the face when she was angry. She wondered a little what this girl would do if one slapped her in the face. She was a round, rosy, good-natured looking creature, but she had a sturdy way which made Mistress Mary wonder if she might not even slap back - if the person who slapped her was only a little girl."

Research, references, inspiration: Having decided to illustrate Martha (the maid) for this chapter title, I thought it appropriate as that was it's title, I need to look into maids of the late 1800's, what they wore and how they wore their hair. Historical accuracy is important in telling this story and making modern audiences engage with an era so different from their own through visuals.

A late 1800's Victorian maid.

Final artwork: Once again, this chapter title was one of the chapter titles I had developed to the process of silk screen printing with colour separation and had put onto screens and printed. However, the prints were unsuccessful and my method changed to digital collage.
