CHAPTER 8. The Robin Who Showed the Way

Chapter 8.
The Robin Who Showed the Way

Summary: With the key to the secret garden now in her possession Mary continues on her search for the lock the key fits more intently than ever before. With a little help from her friend the robin, Mary finds her way and with some help from a strong gust of wind discovers the entrance to the secret garden.

Characters: Mary Lennox, the robin.
Setting: Outside in the gardens.

Quote to work from: "One of the little gusts of wind rushed down the walk, and it was a stronger one than the rest. It was strong enough to wave the branches of the trees, and it was more than strong enough to sway the trailing sprays of untrimmed ivy hanging from the wall. Mary had stepped close to the robin, and suddenly the gust of wind swung aside some loose ivy trails and more suddenly still she jumped towards it and caught it in her hand. This she did because she had seen something under it -"

Research, references, inspiration: Following on from the minimalistic chapter title design of the previous chapter I wanted this chapter to include characters and scenery and portray a scenario from the chapter. I chose the moment Mary discovers the entrance to the secret garden with the help of the robin and a gust of wind that pushes aside the ivy leaves covering the lock.

Ivy.
I also wanted to look at other illustrators and artists interpretations and character designs for a robin which I found a few designs and styles I liked on Christmas card designs.

Roughs/sketches:

Final artwork: This chapter title was again one of the illustrations I had prepared for a silkscreen process however as the others had not gone to plan I did not go to print this design. I instead used digital collage to create my final illustration.
